ABOUT THE SHACK

In 2011, after spending a month immersed in yoga at an ashram in the middle of nowhere India, Kristin sat down to write her 10-year plan. Yogi Ram, her lead teacher, had assigned this task to all students before they left the ashram. He met with each student to discuss their plans and how they would achieve them.

Kristin’s plan was as follows:

  1. Take the next year off to travel and teach yoga

  2. Go to grad school for speech-therapy

  3. Get married and start a family

  4. Open a yoga studio

Yogi Ram asked Kristin how she planned to achieve her goals. ‘I have absolutely no idea,’ she replied. In fact, she wasn’t even sure she wanted these things, let alone believed she could achieve them. Despite this uncertainty, life began to present Kristin with opportunities that allowed her to achieve each goal on her list—all except for opening a yoga studio.

While working her day job as a speech therapist, Kristin learned that one of her clients was moving. She recognized his house because she had seen him in his driveway while driving back from a hike. An idea struck. ‘I might want to buy your house,’ she told him, and that’s exactly what she and her husband did.

Kristin immediately knew the detached shop house was perfect for a yoga studio as soon as she laid eyes on it. Over time, the idea of turning it into a community studio kept resurfacing in her mind. Eventually, Kristin listened to her inner voice and told her husband, Joe, that she would sell the pool table, foosball table, punching bag, and dart board to make room for the studio. Although Joe was sad to see his beloved foosball table and mancave go, he knew what had to be done. And thus, the Yoga Shack was born.
